The English, the English, the English are best

03 May in digital economy bill, english, green party, internet

That's an English chap. They (the English) like to say that to be born English is to win the international lottery. Then why are they acting like Americans?

We tend to mock the Queen and all, as we should, but the truth is that their political system is becoming extremely similar to ours. There are two major parties: Labour and Conservative. There's a third party waiting in the wings somewhere, but it seems that the English opinion is something similar to "oh, how quaint. Some third pahty roustabouts attempting to commingle with the more established political establishment. Ods bodkins!"

The strange bit is that a large number of English people actually like and identify with Nick Clegg, representative for the aforementioned third party, the Liberal Democrats. I'm only writing this because of the distinct lack of outrage over the English Digital Economy Bill, which is an ill-conceived bill meant to curb piracy. The bill's broadness is staggering. In one fell swoop, it allows the government control over Internet Service Providers by enacting a 3-strikes measure (3 suspected copyright infringements and you and your family are OFF the internet), it allows the government to order ISPs to suspend websites/accounts and slow down different types of traffic, and worst of all, remove Gaelic programming.

Ok, I don't much care about the last one, but people in England don't seem to care too much about the rest of it. I hope that the Liberal Democrat party gets a last final push and that the holdouts who are scared of seeming crazy vote in their best interests. As things go, the United States tends to follow Big Mama England, and Big Mama's been doing some nasty things lately.
